# Frog Notes: Markdown notes, and text to paste from the command bar Canonical page: https://frog.beffa.xyz/docs/notes/ Updated: 2026-10-26 Notes keeps Markdown notes privately on this Mac, in a store outside portable configuration exports. A note can also paste from the command bar, which is what Snippets did before Frog 1.0.39. These guides describe Frog 1.0.42, the published download as of October 29, 2026. Download links lead to the latest published release. ## Write and preview a note Export saves a note’s text as a .md file. If Command bar is enabled, note titles and a bounded content preview are searchable there, and selecting a result opens the note. These are local notes with no Frog cloud-sync service. 1. Enable Notes in Features and open its sidebar page. 2. Choose New, give the note a title, and write in the editor. Changes save automatically; a save problem appears inline. 3. Use Preview to render Markdown text, then return to editing with the same toggle. 4. Search titles and content on the Notes page. Copy puts the text on the clipboard; the overflow menu offers Export, Share text, and Delete item. ## Paste a note from the command bar Date and time use the Mac’s locale. Filling in is one pass: clipboard text that contains variable-like strings is not expanded again. A concealed clipboard marker is preserved when a note includes {{clipboard}}. Frog does not expand abbreviations as you type in other apps. Notes without the switch open in Frog when you choose them in the command bar. Export and sharing use the text as written, so use Copy or the command bar when you want the variables filled in. 1. Open a note and turn on Paste from command bar, next to its Edit and Preview toggle. The note gets a small mark in the list. 2. Write the text you reuse and optionally include {{date}}, {{time}}, or {{clipboard}}. 3. With Command bar enabled, search the note’s title and press Return to paste it into the app you were in, or Command–Return to copy it instead. 4. Copy on the Notes page fills in the variables the same way. ```text Update for {{date}} at {{time}} {{clipboard}} Thanks! ``` ## Snippets and shelf items from earlier versions Frog 1.0.39 folded Snippets and Shelf into Notes. Your snippets became notes with Paste from command bar turned on, and each shelf item became a note that keeps its text and its files. Notes is turned on for you if you used either feature. A note that came from the shelf lists its files with Open, Reveal, and Share, and you can drag a file to another app. Frog keeps references, not copies: moving or deleting the original can make a reference unavailable, and deleting the note leaves the file untouched. ## Private persistence and document limits Notes and script text share ~/.config/frog/Toolkit/toolkit-documents.json. The local directory and file use user-only permissions; this JSON is not an encrypted vault. None of these documents is included when exporting config.json. The store permits up to 1,000 notes and scripts in total, at most 1 MB of text and 100 file references per item, and a 16 MB total file. A failed save is shown in the page rather than silently treated as success. Turning Notes off removes its page and command bar results while keeping your notes. Turning it on again restores them. Explicit export or sharing creates a copy outside this private store under your control. ## Related guides - [Command bar](https://frog.beffa.xyz/docs/command-bar/) - [Clipboard](https://frog.beffa.xyz/docs/clipboard/) - [Saved scripts](https://frog.beffa.xyz/docs/scripts/) - [Configuration](https://frog.beffa.xyz/docs/configuration/) ## Source documentation - [Frog source and published releases](https://github.com/t1llo/frog) - [App local-data documentation](https://github.com/t1llo/frog/blob/main/docs/privacy.md)
